Collecting Narratives – a contemporary testimony
Beeing born in 1939 in Germany has made Erika Fucà one oft he few still living people, who can report what happend in times of Nazi-Germany and after.
Throughout suffering at war and during the aftermath in her childhood and youth she experienced a whole society that tried to remain silent about the consequences of war and the regime of Adolf Hitler and his genocide against jewish people.
Her father fought in the war, but got lost close to the end. Till today it is an remaining mystery what happend to him.
At beginnings of Nazi-Germany her close family were strong supporters of the political ideologie oft the NSDAP. They were loosing trust and faith relative to the progession in war. Especially in connection to the suffering and all reports and news about people beeing killed, they were quickly shifting into suspicion and denial of their radical ideologie.
But still even after war they remain silent about what happend. Erika Fucà had no one who talked about the war and explained to her what happend. Even in school nobody was allowed to bring up the topic. First in her teenage times she recognized what the war and the genocide was all about -after reading newspapers, books and watching movies that made her educate herself on history. Till today she is interested in political questions and sociological news.
Her response to the question about learning from mistakes of the past is very pessimistic. In her eyes maybe not all people but at least enough of them to be disappointed still did not learn enough about the history all around Nazi-Germany and so forth repeating the same mistakes.
